
Film adaptation of Yu Nakano's popular graphic novel serialized in Manga Bon magazine. A young beautician who works at a hairdresser's salon in the countryside dreams of becoming a first-class hairdresser. To follow her dream she goes to Tokyo to work as an apprentice stylist at a TV station.
Directed by Genji Nakamura, Kôshoku biyoshi leans on a strong ensemble — Kei Ogawa, Yuriko Azuma, Takurou Kitagawa — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1978.
