About Where did Sharaku go?
Writer Jippensha Ikku hears Tsutaya Juzaburo, a wholesaler of picture books, mutter on his deathbed, "Where has Sharaku gone?" He begins to figure out the true identity of Sharaku, who disappeared after about 150 portraits of actors he created came out.
Directed by Toshio Endo, Where did Sharaku go? leans on a strong ensemble — Kei Satō, Isao Yamagata, Kyôko Kishida — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1968.
