God's Pinch Hitter

Ryo, Eiji and Katsuya assemble as usual in an underground car park, only this time, the woman who has always accompanied them is missing. Driving into central Yokohama in Ryo’s Mercedes, the trio set their plan in motion. After altering a motorcycle’s licence plate, Ryo breaks away, heading off alone. What lies ahead remains uncertain. But as their scheme unfolds, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary operation, rather, a carefully orchestrated “perfect crime”, driven by the intertwined loyalties and affections of three men.

Directed by Toshihiko Yahagi, God's Pinch Hitter leans on a strong ensemble — Yosuke Eguchi, Masanobu Katsumura, Michiru Akiyoshi — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.

The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1991.
