There is a real treasure in an old antique store: A magic mirror from the Middle East. This treasure reveals people's most intimate dreams: it reflects them when you look into it. And whoever enters this store, their gaze is caught by the mirror and visible to everyone is what the observer is trying to keep away from everyone: their most secret obsessions. Perverse abysses open up and the shock sits deep in the viewer's limbs.
Directed by Hugo Bataille, Spiegel der Lust leans on a strong ensemble — Vanessa d'Angely, Jeanette Lange, Julia Jive — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1993.
