
War widow Reiko rebuilds and runs the grocery shop in the house of her husband's family. Many years later, their business is threatened by a newly built supermarket and Reiko's in-laws plan to convert their small shop into a supermarket, to her detriment.
Directed by Mikio Naruse, Yearning leans on a strong ensemble — Hideko Takamine, Yūzō Kayama, Mitsuko Kusabue — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1964.
