Inspired by Martin Scorsese’s short film “The Big Shave” in which a young man blithely shaves himself to death, “The Big Dish” features a young Chinese American girl preparing a meal like no other. The film was made in response to the tenth anniversary of the Chinese government’s brutal crackdown on student demonstrations for democracy in Tiananmen Square in 1989.
Directed by Georgia Lee, The Big Dish: Tiananmen 89 leans on a strong ensemble — Kathy Shao-Lin Lee — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1998.
