In 2006, Mallory Newell was sexually assaulted on her 21st birthday. The next day she underwent a painful rape kit exam to collect clinical evidence. The police shelved her rape kit and evaded her for three years. Valerie continues to advocate for other survivors' rights, when she is called upon to become the key witness in the 2010 Senate Hearing. In the moments before she testifies, she musters the strength to re-live what got her to where she sits now, at the podium to speak in one of the greatest courts of the US, her voice finally heard.

Directed by Jacqueline Elyse Rosenthal, Backlog leans on a strong ensemble — Jill Renner, Bailey Humiston, Bradley Beachum — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.

The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 2023.
