About The Star and the Sea
The film is a moving portrayal of renowned Chinese composer Xian Xinghai's impoverished childhood in a lowly "Danjia" fishing village in Macau at the turn of the century, and his mother's struggles to bring him up with love despite the hardship. It is also a heartening tale of young Xinghai's fight for success, from the awakening of his musical talent at the bottom of Macau society, to the blossoming of his musical flair in Singapore.
Directed by Xiao Guiyun, The Star and the Sea leans on a strong ensemble — Vivian Hsu, Richard Ng Man-Tat, Chen Kun — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
