About Report from the Abyss
Returning from the World Cup to his country, the winner of the diving competitions Afsal Deman learns that a military coup has taken place in his homeland. Having never been involved in politics before, the hero, having decided to fight the dictatorship, becomes a journalist. The film takes place in a small Asian country in the late 70s.
Directed by Georgiy Bzarov, Report from the Abyss leans on a strong ensemble — Georgi Pitskhelauri, Makhmud Esambayev, Baiten Omarov — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1984.
