Awakening

Summer 1940, Lithuania is already occupied by the Soviets. In the interrogation underground, interrogator Pijus Karpavičius is nervously smoking, while in another room two arrested people meet - priest Antanas and Kazys, the leader of the still-organising anti-Soviet underground.

Directed by Jonas Vaitkus, Awakening leans on a strong ensemble — Vladas Bagdonavicius, Saulius Bareikis, Remigijus Bilinskas — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.

The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1991.
