Zion Tzanani, a Yemeni shoe salesman is caught up in a bitter rivalry with his neighbour, Israel Ben-Naim, a Persian shoe salesman. The situation turns even more toxic when Shimshona, Yemeni Zion’s daughter, starts seeing Herzl, Persian Israel’s son. And as if that weren’t bad enough, Zion is also worried that his wife, Ziona, has been having an affair with his archnemesis, Israel. In response, he buys her a diamond ring, which then mysteriously goes missing.
Directed by Boaz Davidson, Tzanani Family leans on a strong ensemble — Gabi Amrani, Yosef Shiloach, Levana Finkelstein — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about romance titles of 1976.
