To a large extent, Cage’s scores do not exist. They consist of instructions on how to create the score: a series of transparencies featuring holes, dots, and lines, layered haphazardly upon one another. Leonardi attempts to follow this general path using a filming technique attentive to visual phenomena.
Directed by Alfredo Leonardi, Musica in corso leans on a strong ensemble — Sylvano Bussotti, John Phetteplace — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about documentary titles of 1966.
