About Composition Class
Masako, the daughter of an impoverished itinerant tinsmith, wins a grammar school composition contest with an essay about her neighborhood. The much publicized essay ends up causing the family problems and their chronic money troubles threaten Masako's further education.
Directed by Kajirō Yamamoto, Composition Class leans on a strong ensemble — Hideko Takamine, Masaru Kodaka, Shiro Mizutani — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1938.
