A fantasy that anthropomorphizes the stray cats living on Kitagijima, a remote island off the coast of Okayama, much like Yumiko Oshima’s classic manga "Wata no Kunihoshi". The film depicts young girls conversing in “cat language” (with subtitles), occasionally interacting with humans, as they live freely and spontaneously yet still struggle desperately to survive.
Directed by Akiyoshi Imazeki, Shimaneko leans on a strong ensemble — Raiju Kamata, Coco Masui, Misaki — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 2024.
