Shalom the Interpreter

An American tourist and his daughter, Betty, arrive in Alexandria, where they meet Shalom, a lottery-ticket vendor who pretends to be an interpreter despite knowing no English. Mistaking him for a genuine translator, the tourist and his daughter hire Shalom as their guide. When the tourist expresses a desire to go on a desert hunting expedition, one of the local pashas offers to take him along, leaving Betty behind with Shalom, who convinces himself that she has fallen in love with him.

Directed by Togo Mizrahi, Shalom the Interpreter leans on a strong ensemble — Shalom, عبده محرم, عدالات — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.

The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about comedy titles of 1935.
