About Couples and summer
Awatif, the dancer, loves Jamil, the musician at the nightclub where she works, even though they are both married. The lovers get a chance to be together after Jamil's wife travels to the summer resort with her children, and Nabil, Awatif's husband, travels to Lebanon. When he visits her at home, the police arrest him, thinking he is Nabil. He goes to prison, and Jamil is released from prison after discovering the mistake and decides to take revenge for what happened to him.
Directed by Essa Karama, Couples and summer leans on a strong ensemble — Kamal Al-Shenawy, Samira Ahmed, Tawfiq Al-Deqen — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about thriller titles of 1961.
