About Return of the absent
The boy runs away from his parents' home and his mother dies of grief over him. Time turns against them and their situation worsens, and their hope becomes that the absent son will return. A young man arrives at the house, impersonating the absent son, but as soon as he sees the kind father and the gentle sister, his heart overflows with repentance and love, and he devotes his life to serving them and making them happy. He becomes passionately in love with the girl who thinks he is her brother.
Directed by Ahmed Galal, Return of the absent leans on a strong ensemble — Mahmoud El Meligy, Fouad Fahim, Mary Queeny — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1947.
