Aziza is robbed of her jewelry. A person claiming to be the jewelry thief calls Aziza and asks her to leave her apartment door open so he can return the stolen items. She reports the call to the police, but Aziza is surprised by the entry of her neighbor Esmat, who is arrested by the police hiding inside her apartment. It turns out that he is not the thief who robbed her, but Esmat suffers from sleepwalking.
Directed by Hasan El-Saifi, Criminal in spite of himself leans on a strong ensemble — Sameer Ghanem, Hala Sedki, Samira Sedqy — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1991.
