About The 35-Year Promise
Due to his impoverished upbringing Nishihata Tamotsu is unable to read or write. Fortunately he is supported by his beloved wife Kyouko who helps him with the things he cannot do alone. As thanks for her support Tamotsu wishes to write her a love letter, and so decides to enroll at a local evening school in order to finally learn to write.
Directed by Renpei Tsukamoto, The 35-Year Promise leans on a strong ensemble — Tsurube Shofukutei, Tomoyo Harada, Daiki Shigeoka — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about romance titles of 2025.
