Soyoko is a 19-year-old girl with ADHD who clings on to dreams of studying at an art school while juggling a part-time job and caring for her disabled father. As overburdened caregivers quit around her and with no relatives to help, Soyoko desperately applies for welfare but a callous caseworker makes increasingly awful demands for funds leading a vulnerable and isolated Soyoko into a terrible situation.
Directed by Akihiro Toda, Soyoko leans on a strong ensemble — Mei Furusawa, Hidemasa Mase, Rei Ogawa — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 2024.
