A dramatized account of Denmark's first women's rights activist, Mathilde Fibiger. Based on letters and diaries, it depicts her life and views from the 1850s, when she published the controversial epistolary novel Clara Raphael, until 1872, when she died at the age of only 41.
Directed by Hans Engberg, Det begyndte med Mathilde leans on a strong ensemble — Anne Birch, Brigitte Kolerus, Birthe Neumann — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1978.
