About The Young Lovers and the Escaped Prisoner
Yu Kin-sheng, a farmer, was sentenced to ten years for killing a man when drunk. His wife took care of their child, little Hua, and supported her mother-in-law in the hospital. When Hua was five years old, she was hired to be a child bride in a distant village to pay for her grandmother's medical expenses.
Directed by Chang Ying, The Young Lovers and the Escaped Prisoner leans on a strong ensemble — Pai Hung, Tsai Yang-Ming, Lung Yu — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1968.
