About A Female Jailhouse
Chie escapes to an empty villa in the mountains with her boyfriend Shimamoto, from whom she has stolen a large sum of money. However, she is unable to escape the clutches of the police, and while Shimamoto escapes, she is sent to prison alone. Tatsuko and Kaori are in the shared cell with her. Not liking Chie's cold attitude, Tatsuko and the others start bullying her. A few months later, her younger sister Izumi comes to visit Chie. She says she needs money for their sick mother, and asks her to tell them where the money is hidden...
Directed by Toshikazu Katsu, A Female Jailhouse leans on a strong ensemble — Miyuki Katô, Yoko Satomi, Motoko Sasaki — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1999.
