Inspired by a book of Italo Calvino, Elba & Federico tells the story of a couple in their day-to-day life. The man works at night, the woman during the day. The moments they meet in their tiny, sleazy apartment are of unexpected tenderness, but more often, of out of hand futilities and pent-up frustrations. This short film was originally part of the performance Her Body Doesn’t Fit Her Soul (1993).
Directed by Wim Vandekeybus, Elba & Federico leans on a strong ensemble — Vivian Cruz, Dirk Roofthooft, Elba Peralta — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1993.
