A very young André leaves for Paris promising his childhood friend Maryse to see her again. Twenty years later he is working for Oscar, Captain of the Royal Guards, as her subordinate and secretly in love with her. One evening he duels with Black Knight and gets his eye stabbed. The performance at Chunichi Theater in February 2009 is enhanced by an additional story: a spin-off specially written for Takarazuka by Riyoko Ikeda, the original author of The Rose of Versailles. This spin-off bestows upon Takarazuka's The Rose of Versailles a new allure.
Directed by Shinji Ueda, Side Story: The Rose of Versailles -André- leans on a strong ensemble — Sei Matobu, Sakurano Ayane, So Kazuho — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 2009.
