About Road to Life
The first Russian talking picture which won a prize at the 1st Venice IFF. The action is set in 1923. The USSR is struggling with hunger and economic ruin. It is a story of homeless teenagers for whom a work commune is set up with the idea of uniting and reforming them.
Directed by Nikolai Ekk, Road to Life leans on a strong ensemble — Nikolai Batalov, Yvan Kyrlya, Mikhail Zharov — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1931.
