About SEX and the checkmate!
Kouka's father, Kosaka, was a professional shogi player obsessed with money and women, and met a brutal death. Despite her mother's objections, she became obsessed with the greedy path of shogi, greedily seeking victory. But she is taught the ways of shogi and women by an erotic shogi player.
Directed by Masatsugu Asahi, SEX and the checkmate! leans on a strong ensemble — Ayaka Tomoda, Takaaki Iwao, Yosuke Minokawa — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 2016.
