The quirky Chichikov settles into a tiny room filled with strange objects. Suddenly, the space around him comes to life: the curtains whisper nonsense, the cabinets slam shut, and the floorboards creak slyly. It seems as though Chichikov has stepped inside his famous little box, and the dead souls—neatly copied by him—have found their voice, risen up, and begun a devilish dance around their captor.
Directed by Valery Fokin, The Room at the Hotel in the City of NN leans on a strong ensemble — Avangard Leontyev, Sergey Sazontyev, Valeriy Yeryomichev — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about comedy titles of 2003.
