About Riders to the Sea
A one-act tragedy, the play is set at Inishmaan in the Aran Islands, and like all of Synge’s plays it is noted for capturing the poetic dialogue of rural Ireland. The plot is based not on the traditional conflict of human wills but on the hopeless struggle of a people against the impersonal.
Directed by Ognjen Miličević, Riders to the Sea leans on a strong ensemble — Ljiljana Krstić, Neda Spasojević, Donka Ignjatović — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about tv movie titles of 1969.
