
A traveling troupe arrives in a lively southern port town during the Tanabata festival, led by the mysterious swordsman Daigorō, whose incredible skill quickly makes him a local sensation. Beneath his fierce persona, however, he hides a tragic past: he is actually Hikōichi, a fisherman who lost his beloved Oyū to a cruel feudal lord years earlier. Reunited during the festival under the stars of Tanabata, the two lovers attempt to reclaim their happiness, but the lord’s jealousy and deception lead them toward a heartbreaking fate.
Directed by Masahiro Makino, The Man Who Came to the Harbor Festival leans on a strong ensemble — Ryutaro Otomo, Satomi Oka, Shinobu Chihara — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1961.
