About The Day the Earth Froze
American-dubbed, re-edited version of the 1959 Soviet-Finnish fantasy co-production Sampo. Produced by Roger Corman, it's shorter by almost 30 minutes, the names of crew members and characters are drastically changed and key plot scenes are removed.
Directed by Aleksandr Ptushko, The Day the Earth Froze leans on a strong ensemble — Marvin Miller, Andris Ošiņš, Eve Kivi — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about fantasy titles of 1964.
