Ryōji Shuto, the only son of a top-tier cram school owner, is a man determined to take the shortest route to the top—not only aiming to become the boss of the Komashi gang, but also to rise to the pinnacle of the yakuza world. The first target Ryōji set his sights on was the Onimatsu Alliance, which had recently moved into the neighbourhood. Ryōji recklessly challenges the chairman, Kyōsuke Matsuguchi, to a one-on-one duel, only to be dismissed out of hand. Meanwhile, Matsuguchi, having set his sights on the Shuto Seminar, begins to blackmail Ryōji’s father, Rentaro, using the school’s management policies as leverage. Learning of his father’s predicament, Ryōji stages a grand charade that even draws in Matsuguchi’s wife, Kyoko!
Directed by Hitoshi Ishikawa, The Don: The Legend of the Fireball leans on a strong ensemble — Daijiro Tsutsumi, Mamiko Tayama, Yu Mizuki — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1996.
