About Emperor of Evil
This film, directed by Banmei Takahashi, is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Atsushi Mizoguchi. It depicts the love-hate relationship between an older brother who tries to live an honest life and a younger brother who tries to return to the world of crime. Shigetoku, the younger brother who made a name for himself in the yakuza group "Toryu-kai" alongside his older brother Atsuhiko, is arrested after a conflict with a rival organization. Eight years later, Shigetoku returns to Atsuhiko, who has gone straight, but Shigetoku shows resentment towards Atsuhiko's lifestyle.
Directed by Banmei Takahashi, Emperor of Evil leans on a strong ensemble — Tsuyoshi Ihara, Kippei Shiina, Satomi Murakami — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about crime titles of 1994.
