With mixed feelings, Fritz and his young wife travel to Gut Buchholz for a visit. Their aunt’s passion is matchmaking; that’s why it’s troubling that she wasn’t consulted in this case. On the train, the young couple meets Maria Holm, their aunt’s new secretary. She was hired based on a letter of recommendation from the estate manager. They agree that Fritz’s wife will come to the estate as a secretary, while Maria will stay at a hotel for a few days. Meanwhile, the estate manager, Gottlieb, has confessed to the uncle that the secretary he recommended is actually his fiancée.
Directed by Peter Paul Brauer, Die perfekte Sekretärin leans on a strong ensemble — Hansi Arnstaedt, Mady Rahl, Rudolf Klicks — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about comedy titles of 1937.
