About Kak Kek Baru Nak Up
Telling the story of Kathy (Catriona Ross), a woman in her 30s with a modern personality of mixed English, Kelantan and Sabah heritage, who is forced to return to her family's ancestral home after losing her job. For the sake of survival, and after gaining inspiration from her younger brother, Danny (Mark Adam), Kathy decides to become a 'food reviewer'. To build a unique identity, Kathy transforms into character 'Kak Kek' and makes reviews using the Kelantan dialect. Her videos go viral due to her charm and her iconic crooked headscarf which attracts much attention. However, she must face Sofea (Ellyza Azizi), an 'influencer' who is envious of her success.
Directed by Irwan Abdul Rauf, Kak Kek Baru Nak Up leans on a strong ensemble — Catriona Ross, Mark Adam, Yusuf Bahrin — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 2020.
