Highlighting the unique life of the Peranakan Chinese community in Terengganu. The story follows May (24 years old) who arrives in Terengganu in search of a Peranakan Chinese woman known only as Mek Hwa in her 60s, guided by a photograph in a letter left by her father, Goh in his 60s, in order to fulfill her father's unfulfilled wish.
Directed by Sabri Yunus, Kebaya Mek Hwa leans on a strong ensemble — Pauline Tan, Syazwan Zulkifly, Issey Fazlisham — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 2018.
