Maruya Ginzo, an antiques enthusiast and a wealthy man, buys an uninhabited island called Namazu-jima, mistaking it for Numazu-jima tea bowls. He is not a man to just give up, so he sets about building an entertainment district there, but the island is inhabited by five castaways, including Kinpachi Mimura. The Ginzo gang try to entangle Kinpachi and drive them out, and the slapstick drama is caused by the island's inhabitants.
Directed by Yūzō Kawashima, Oh Citizens! leans on a strong ensemble — Kyōko Asagiri, Shinichirō Minami, Shunji Sakai — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about comedy titles of 1948.
