Henry and Jeanne are lovers. They are shocked to discover that Henry’s mother once had an affair with Jeanne’s father, which resulted in a child—meaning they would be half-siblings. Overcome with shame, they decide to take their own lives, but they encounter an old ferryman who reveals yet another twist: Jeanne, too, is an illegitimate child.

Directed by Carl Froelich, Toteninsel leans on a strong ensemble — Lil Dagover, Walter Janssen, Olga Wojan — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
