About The Merry Month of May
Rich heiress Man Yu-sau disguises as a flower peddler in search of a genuine lover; her poor cousin Man Bik poses as a rich heiress to ensnare a husband. The two fall in love with the Wu brothers Lap-ming and Lap-tak respectively. The Wu matriarch despises Yu-sau for her humble background. However, Lap-ming elopes to marry her while Lap-tak marries Bik. The disguises are duly exposed, to the mother's embarrassment.
Directed by Fung Chi-Kong, The Merry Month of May leans on a strong ensemble — Yam Kim-Fai, Pak Suet-Sin, Cheng Pik-Ying — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about comedy titles of 1955.
