The Gadis

The story of a group of girls from a village who want to change their lives. Lina and Lisa live with their father, while Nad lives with Grandmother Timah. Nad's return to the village catches the attention of many, especially Lisa, because she has become more beautiful and her life appears luxurious. Lina falls in love again with her ex-boyfriend Shazman, but Shazman's mother prefers Nad because she feels she is suited to her son who is highly educated. Nad invites Lisa to KL, if she wants to be like her. Will Lisa follow her heart? What awaits her in KL? Episode 1: Lisa is late for school again but as usual, her best friend Rocky helps her out. Lisa's sworn enemy at school, Mei Fen, becomes the main challenge to win the scholarship cash. Lina is stuck at home because there is not enough money to buy household necessities. Her sense of being stuck is compounded by worry when she learns that Grandmother Timah's house has been robbed.

Directed by Liyana Jasmay, The Gadis leans on a strong ensemble — Yuna Rahim, Fatin Afeefa, Erynne Erynna — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.

The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 2020.
