About Wakai yatsu
Tetsuo Asakura, the son of a bus company president, was planning to take it easy as he neared graduation from college, but due to a series of unexpected events, he ended up taking a part-time job at his father’s company. Working undercover as a trainee bus conductor at a ski resort, Tetsuo found that the locals weren’t always kind to him. Amidst this, only Hisako, who worked at a hot spring inn, treated him with warmth.
Directed by Hirokazu Ichimura, Wakai yatsu leans on a strong ensemble — Yukio Hashi, Chieko Baisho, Toyozō Yamamoto — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1963.
