About Black Hair Velvet Soul
A drunk husband has a gambling compulsion that ends up putting him in a bad way with the local Yakuza. Unable to pay his debt, he hocks the deed to his wife’s restaurant in order to stay out of trouble with the thugs. But it’s not enough. The wife has to sacrifice her body as well.
Directed by Mamoru Watanabe, Black Hair Velvet Soul leans on a strong ensemble — Izumi Shima, Kumiko Hayano, Junko Ike — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1982.
