About The Lost Letter
The first Soviet cel-animated feature film, based on the story with the same name by Nikolai Gogol. A messenger is tasked with delivering a letter to the Tsarina, which he tucks into his hat for safekeeping on the road. While resting at night, a band of demons steals the hat, and he must travel to Hell to retrieve it.
Directed by Valentina Brumberg, Zinaida Brumberg, The Lost Letter leans on a strong ensemble — Mikhail Yanshin, Boris Livanov, Sergei Martinson — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about animation titles of 1945.
