About The Cruel Sea
The first feature film to be made by the state of Kuwait. It is a period piece about Kuwait before the discovery of oil when fishing was the predominant occupation. Bas Ya Bahar is the story of a crippled pearl diver who forbids his son Mussaid to go to sea to dive for pearls.
Directed by Khalid Al Siddiq, The Cruel Sea leans on a strong ensemble — Saad Al-Faraj, Hayat Al-Fahad, Ali AlMufeedi — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1971.
