The 17-year-old, musically gifted Stephan is expelled from school for making statements critical of the regime. With his future as a musician now blocked, he commits suicide. His girlfriend Cornelia wants to follow him to his death, but is prevented from doing so by her parents at the last moment.
Directed by Reiner Kunze, Die wunderbaren Jahre leans on a strong ensemble — Martin May, Dietrich Mattausch, Christine Wodetzky — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
