About The Ghost Cat and the Mysterious Shamisen
Mitsue is a popular stage actress and the lover of a shamisen player named Seijuro. She jealously murders two other objects of his affection: Okiyo, a young woman from a samurai family, and Kuro, a cat. The spirits of Okiyo and Kuro then merge into a vengeful ghost.
Directed by Kiyohiko Ushihara, The Ghost Cat and the Mysterious Shamisen leans on a strong ensemble — Sumiko Suzuki, Mitsuko Mori, Kinue Utagawa — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about horror titles of 1938.
