The manufacturer Xaver Frey is forced into bankruptcy by his bank and decides to commit suicide in a sleeping car from Vienna to Venice. There he encounters the sleeping car attendant Horak, who is about to retire and who uses every legal and illegal means to prevent his suicide.
Directed by Peter Weck, Ein Schutzengel auf Reisen leans on a strong ensemble — Otto Schenk, Peter Weck, Fritz Muliar — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about comedy titles of 1997.
