About Hong Du-kae
Desperate for a grandson, the Lees hire a surrogate mother for thei son Man-ho and their daughter-in-law Seok-hyang. However, when they discover that it is Man-bo who cannot father children, the Lees enlist the services of the merchant Hong Du-gae to impregnate Seok-hyang. However, they have no intention of allowing him to live afterwards and run the risk of a scandal to their family name.
Directed by Kim Jun-sik, Hong Du-kae leans on a strong ensemble — Kim Chin-tai, Lee Mi-ji, Bang Hee — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1990.
