About The Cellar and the Almond Tree
The Countess lives in her East European palace, oblivious to the new regime that has moved in. After the war Volubin, a Marxist writer, is instructed to obtain from her the keys to her wine-cellar, which are needed for a celebration dinner. First shown in 1970, this play charts the transition of dictatorial power in the 20th century.
Directed by Alan Bridges, The Cellar and the Almond Tree leans on a strong ensemble — Celia Johnson, Peter Vaughan, Sydney Tafler — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1970.
