The Hangman

We follow the last days of an old officer and his housemaid as fear of death, hell and superstition cloud over the mind of the man as he has to sell a sinister ancient wooden figure or his soul will not be saved.

Directed by Magne Bleness, The Hangman leans on a strong ensemble — Knut Wigert, Birgitte Victoria Svendsen — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.

The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1983.
